John Combs Jr., who was a former member of the Robin Hood Band, formed the history of the Royal Cavaliers Youth Band in 1962. The Royal Cavaliers grew over the years into the best youth band in Southern California if not the nation. The Royal Cavaliers organization included the Royal Cavaliers Band, the Wind Ensemble, Jazz band the Royals junior band. The Royal Cavaliers achieved an unmatched record of parade, concert and field championships including the 1969 Calgary Stampede International Band Championship, the 1972 California VFW State Champions, and the 1975 VFW National Championship.
Royal Cavaliers helped pioneer the touring youth band model with national tours in 1971, 1973, 1974, 1976 & 1978. The Royal Cavaliers were undefeated during the whole 1973 tour. In 1982, the band became a drum corps but folded before ever competing in a DCI sanctioned show. The Royal Cavaliers Performing Arts will now take over the reins and continue the vision of the Royal Cavaliers Youth Band.
